OSF Medical Group

History

Group of Founding Sisters

The first medical group at OSF may well have been the Sisters themselves. Arriving in Peoria in 1876, they welcomed a new land, a new language and a new way to serve the Lord. They cared for people in their homes and in the little house where they slept on cots in the attic. No one was turned away.

Providing the greatest care and love, however, has presented different challenges over time.  In the early 1990's, OSF HealthCare was primarily a hospital-based system with each facility operating independently; physicians maintained their own small offices, separate and distinct from the medical centers.

OSF had to rethink that model; what works today is never good enough for tomorrow. Our state-of-the-art medical centers offered superb care, but many outpatient procedures could be performed in off-site clinics such as ambulatory care centers and physician offices.

Since its official start in 1994, the growth of OSF Medical Group has been nothing short of astonishing. There are now over 65 offices employing more than 1,000 physicians, nurses and support staff, a testament to the patients’ needs for compassionate, quality care that is close to home.

Primary care physicians were the first to join the OSF family; today, OSF Medical Group also employs a large group of specialists, ranging from allergists to urologists.
